Abstract

The robotic approach to adrenalectomy continues to build on the progress made by the minimally invasive laparoscopic adrenalectomy, which has become the standard of care for small- to moderate-sized, benign adrenal tumors. Indications for laparoscopic and robotic adrenalectomy are essentially the same. Those surgeons who are familiar with laparoscopic approaches to both the left and right adrenal glands should be easily able to adapt their technique to the robotic method. Compared to laparoscopy, robotic adrenalectomy offers improved visualization with better operating ergonomics, as well as the increased dexterity afforded by wristed instruments. As robotic systems and the available vessel sealing technology continue to advance, robotic approaches to the adrenal gland will likely become an increasingly attractive technique for surgeons.
