Linguistic and Psycholinguistic Approaches on Implicatures and Presuppositions

Abstract

In this chapter the authors discuss recent literature in the theory of semantic meaning and pragmatic inference. They begin by presenting the traditional view of content generation in linguistics and philosophy of language and then consider some problematic cases for such a view, for example contextual dependence of asserted content, presupposition and discourse, and non-classical theories of implicatures. They also mention experimental investigation of content. Then, they review the contributions to the volume.
