Abstract

Myofascial pain is a common etiology of acute cervical pain. Myofascial pain may be referred through trigger points and experienced in other locations as well. Trigger points are believed to result from foci of muscular strain. Conditions other than myofascial pain, such as infection and radiculopathy, must be considered as they require a different course of action. Treatment of myofascial pain focuses on conservative care, with physical therapy, heat, and NSAIDs being the mainstays of treatment. Treatment may also involve injections. Patients should be educated on proper stretching techniques and positioning to avoid placing undue stress on cervical muscles.
