Abstract

Pelvic pain affects up to 24% of women with myofascial pelvic pain being a major etiology. It is diagnosed after ruling out other etiologies and by identifying trigger points located within the pelvic floor muscles through direct palpation. A complete examination includes evaluation of the patient’s gait, posture, spine, and hips. Pelvic floor physical therapy is considered one of the first lines of treatment. Medication options include tricyclic antidepressants and muscle relaxants. A multidisciplinary approach is vital for the patient with chronic pelvic pain.
