Abstract

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek medical attention. Costochondritis accounts for 30% of chest pain visits to the emergency department and 13% of visits to primary care. It is a clinical diagnosis characterized by reproducible chest pain with palpation to costochondral junctions or chondrosternal joints. Serious causes of chest pain such as myocardial infarction, aortic dissection, pneumothorax, or pulmonary embolus must be ruled out before diagnosis of costochondritis can be made. Workup includes chest radiography or CT scan. Costochondritis is self-limited with treatment aimed at pain control and activity modification.
