Abstract

The Introduction defines the study problem. It describes how the two issues of the nature and origin of tribal identity in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have not only been part of the debate in African Studies since the 1970s, but have also been raised and debated by political leaders and ordinary citizens in SSA. It raises the two core questions of the study, states the study’s main three-point argument, discusses the benefits of the study and its methods, and describes the content of the book chapters.
