Abstract
Growing dependence on food imports and adverse impacts of trade liberalizations on food security is a central theme in international development. This study is one of the first attempts to analyse food-import dependency and food self-reliance strategy in the Caribbean, estimating economic and social benefits of the reduced food-import bill. This research has high relevance in the context of rising food-import bill, volatility of international food prices, increasing threat of natural disasters and existing malnutrition in the Caribbean countries. This study quantifies benefits of revitalized agriculture, and main results lead to the design of new approach to the development of public policy interventions. Author provides sound policy recommendations, and after completing this book, the readers will have a clear idea of food-import dependency in the Caribbean and its main implications on various aspects related to food and nutrition security.
