Abstract
This chapter describes the methods and techniques used to analyse the economic and social impacts of increasing food self-sufficiency in the Caribbean. The methodology of this project involves a mixed-methods approach. For this research, nine English-speaking developing Caribbean countries possessing similar characteristics were selected. Food import coverage indicator and levels of food import dependency and self-sufficiency are estimated in order to indicate the level of a country’s vulnerability and extent of total available food that is satisfied by local production and by imports. Revealed comparative advantage index is used to assess agricultural potential of the Caribbean countries, and the economy-wide impact of increasing food self-sufficiency is estimated through economic multiplier effect.
