Abstract
This chapter presents three fundamental functions of religious violence—cosmological, ethical, and social-psychological. While drawing upon a number of critical scholars from multiple disciplines, the chapter focuses on the seminal work of theorist Rene Girard. The chapter concludes by showing how theories of religious violence can be used to enhance our understanding of sport.
