Abstract
Since its establishment, the African Union (AU) has given a central role to the global African diaspora in its ambitious agenda of developing the continent and building the Union. The chapter discussed the genesis, rationale, formulation, and implementation of AU’s diaspora initiative. It dissects the key steps that have marked the AU’s efforts at engaging with the African diaspora and reflects on the main policy instruments that have emerged from these efforts as well as the challenges that need to be overcome to build a strong Africa–diaspora partnership.
