Abstract
In this paper we attempt to present the early stage of Hungarian banking supervision’s history, with respect to the proposals of the organisation of different supervisory bodies from the second half of the nineteenth century until the establishment of the Financial Institution’s Centre (1916), inclusive. We present the opinions connected with the shaping of banking supervision, the related arguments for and against, the proposals and initiatives for the establishment of specific supervisory bodies and operational frameworks thereof.

The importance of the protection of depositors had been laid by János Galgóczy in 1878; i.e. in respect of the banks both for the purpose of regulation and oversight the primary consideration was the protection of the interests of the household sector, and particularly that of the deposit holders (Galgóczy 1878).
