Abstract

Members of the family are small-sized crab usually living commensally with other marine species like bivalves. Sexual dimorphism is conspicuous in this family with females markedly larger than males. Females are mostly settling inside their host and are more frequently seen in comparison to males which are mostly free-living. Therefore most of the following characteristics are provided for females. Carapace usually circular to subcircular, soft in females, hard in males. Front narrow, usually entire. Orbits and eyes distinctly very small. Chelipeds medium-sized, fingers usually long, but shorter than manus, cutting edges with small rounded teeth. Walking legs slightly flattened. Third maxillipeds operculiform, merus completely fused to ischium. Abdomen of males and females with seven movable somites, abdomen of males narrow, abdomen of females markedly broad. Genital opening of males and females sternal.
