Abstract

Although cases of cerebral vascular disease in the pediatric population are seen less frequently than their adult counterparts, these anomalies have the potential for significant morbidity and mortality, given the life expectancy in this age group. In recent years, there have been advancements in the care and management of adults with neurovascular issues such as aneurysm and stroke that are based on high-quality clinical studies. For children, most of the data in the literature is based on small sample occurrences and is often retrospective. Despite this, advancements in management, especially endovascular and surgical modalities, has led to improved outcomes in this age group.

The vast majority of pediatric malformations fall into one of the following groups: aneurysm, cavernous malformation (CM), vein of Galen malformation (VGAM), venous angiomas, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), and moyamoya. The latter two are the most common causes of hemorrhagic and ischemic pediatric stroke in children older than 1 year, respectively.

This chapter summarizes the occurrences, causes of vascular lesions, pathophysiology, and treatments. Also included are patient examples that help to make the clinical picture easier to understand.
