Abstract

The war for independence of the Piedmont against the Austrians didn’t affect life in Florence in any very precise way, as the Grand Duke of Tuscany had chosen not to send his troops. But the Tuscans rejoiced when France sent her troops to help the Piedmont, and on 27 April 1959 Mary reported that “crowds of people assembled on the Piazza dell’Indipendenza and raised the tri-colored flag”.
