Historical Urban Landscape

Abstract

This chapter argues for the necessary demarcation between the two best established domains of interpreting the past for current purposes: historical science and cultural heritage. Their comparative definition is important because of recent tendencies, which affect not only these domains and their representatives but also a wide range of non-professional social actors. Since the comparison concerns contemporary domains which are constantly evolving, a suitable methodology is established with three sets of indicators (perception of time, ideological content, and the role of the historian), and a parallel chronology of the two domains is constructed, which lays the ground for the future analysis of one of the basic dilemmas of contemporary heritage protection: how to reconcile the originally administrative language of cultural heritage with the relevant academic discourse.
