Abstract

In today’s competitive healthcare market, hospitalists must ensure that they are consistently seen as valuable assets to their institution. New hospitalists as well as those who have been on the field for years need to show their worth to key stakeholders or risk attrition. In this chapter, we propose thought provoking questions to start hospitalists on the right path to success. Some of the key questions a hospitalist or hospitalist leader must ask themselves include questions about your strengths and weaknesses, important stakeholders in your career path, how you are perceived in your institution, expectations of your performance and the strength of your relationship with mentors and sponsors among others. By asking yourself these key questions, you will develop more insight into where you are in your career, where you need to be as a hospitalist, and how to take the necessary steps to ensure that you are ‘visible’ in your organization and seen as ‘valuable’.
