Abstract
The concept of the patient experience is variably defined but generally encompasses how the patient’s somatic symptoms interact with their psychology. The hospitalist can impact their patient’s experience of disease in such a way to improve their overall well-being. There are a number of methods to improve this patient experience and some of these are discussed in this chapter. Some of methods include thoughtful and culturally sensitive history taking, encouraging patient-centered care, good communication and efficient utilization of guideline driven care when appropriate. Success in improving your patient’s experience of disease can objectively be measured and is an important part of the business and art of medicine.
