Abstract
The life span in industrialized countries is longer than ever before. These elders are living a more active lifestyle increasing their likelihood of injury. Trauma represents the fifth leading cause of death of the elderly. Pelvic fracture is present in 3–8 % of skeletal injuries. In the older population, pelvic fracture can occur not only from high-energy mechanisms commonly seen in young people but also from low-energy mechanisms. Fractures associated with low-energy injury mechanisms are known as fragility fractures and are frequently associated with osteoporosis.
