Abstract

The incidence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), particularly multidrug-resistant TB and extensively drug-resistant TB, is increasing and is a major complication in global attempts to control TB. New anti-TB drugs and rapid diagnostics have been developed; however, the pathogenesis of drug resistance remains unclear. Fragmented treatment regimens, efflux pumps, and pharmacokinetic variability may all play a part in the rise of drug-resistant pathogens. Drug-resistant TB continues to be associated with poor treatment outcomes and high mortality rates.
