Advanced Colonoscopy and Endoluminal Surgery

Abstract

Colonoscopy is both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Periprocedural management of patients on anticoagulation remains a clinical challenge. A risk assessment balancing bleeding and thrombosis upon cessation of the medication is essential. Further, colonoscopic procedures may increase the risk of infectious complications in certain group of patients, mandating understanding of who might benefit from prophylaxis.

Published guidelines exist regarding issues of colonoscopy and VTE and infection prophylaxis; however, there is a paucity of data. In this chapter, the common anticoagulation medications and the recently published guidelines regarding periprocedural management of anticoagulation and antibiotic prophylaxis are reviewed.
