Human Trafficking Is a Public Health Issue

Abstract

In this chapter, the author begins by providing a brief history of the abolition of slavery in the USA, and the subsequent development of the USA statutory frameworks to prohibit and prevent human trafficking. This legal background is meant to illuminate our understanding of human trafficking as the author recounts his own unique story of victimization as a young teen, including the factors that made him vulnerable, the details of the crime, and how he overcame this tragic time in his life. The chapter is meant to aid public health professionals in better understanding the broad scope of the crime, and how to better identify and support child victims of trafficking and exploitation.
