Abstract

In this chapter we will consider 1-D structures, axially loaded bars. Besides Euler-Lagrange approach, the finite element method is introduced. Several examples are solved on a computer using commercial codes. An example of axially loaded bar from thermal stresses is also considered. Next, we deal with Virtual Work principle, another way of expressing energy methods, in solving 1-D structures in this chapter. This principle is particularly suited for statically indeterminate structures. Finally we will consider Ritz method to minimize the total potential energy.
