Abstract

In general, Baldwin , Neo-Darwinists , Lamarckians , and even mutationists (Chap. 2, Table 2.1) emphasized the striking “fit” (match) between the phenotype of organisms and the external environment in which they live. Of course, they all knew about the non-survival of organisms and about known cases of mass extinctions, but mostly these were associated with phenomena such as relatively rapid and/or severe changes of the external—either biotic or abiotic—environment.
