Abstract
Data embodies inherent messages which serve as critical input for policy framework, for its programme content or for use of its monitoring analysis. Data has, therefore, to be pure, properly validated and relevant. Untested data or data not properly verified are of no use and are not permissible for any use for any meaningful discourse on framing any policy or analysis. Depending on the purpose of study and analysis, data requirement could be met either from Primary sources or from Secondary sources. Usually, Census publications from the Government of India, which are secondary in nature from the perspective of population control managers, are acted upon for population related analysis. Similarly, SRS data or National Health and Family Welfare Survey data and the like are all important sources of Secondary data. The Primary data, on the other hand, are generated by the organisation through efforts of its own either by way of undertaking field visits and data collection e.g. Eligible Couple List. Similarly, Primary data are generated by way of collection of its own institutional data for monitoring and other purposes. The sole criteria for use of data for population related issues are of its purity and also of its relevance.
