“Just Another Monster”: Michonne and the Trope of the Angry Black Woman

Abstract

The enigmatic Michonne in the AMC series The Walking Dead initially is given no backstory. Consequently, Michonne comes across as inexplicably hostile, rash, and recalcitrant. Yet she remains one of the most popular characters on the show. This chapter argues that although stereotypes of the Angry Black Woman and the Strong Black Woman play a significant role in Michonne’s popularity with the show’s audience, the character does eventually overcome those reductive representations.
