Abstract
Work of Saussure on semiotics is discussed, with a focus on signs and on differential nature of concepts. Peter Farb’s work on language is explained, and rules behind language use are mentioned. Ideas by linguist Francisco Yus about gaps in conversations are offered.
Application Work by James Pennebaker on speed dating is considered and the way in which language use can predict which players will date after speed-dating sessions. Language use is shown to be a reflection of people’s identities.
