Abstract

This chapter deals with applications of HBO in otolaryngology. Sudden deafness and acute acoustic trauma are good indications for HBO therapy, and there is improvement of these conditions if the treatment is carried out soon after the onset of symptoms. However, HBO therapy is an adjunctive to conventional treatments and not an alternative. HBO is effective in relieving tinnitus as a component of inner ear disorders, but its use for tinnitus alone as a symptom is questionable. HBO is usually ineffective in chronic conditions encountered in otolaryngology where chronic anoxic is a factor in pathogenesis, e.g., its use in Meniere’s syndrome is controversial. In symptoms secondary to ischemia, e.g., of the acoustic nerve, its HBO may be effective in the chronic stages, as the situation is comparable to that of ischemia in the brain. Effectiveness in facial palsy (Bell’s palsy) has not been proven, although good results have been obtained in several series of patients. Malignant otitis externa is a good indication for the use of HBO as the effect of HBO in enhancing the effect of antibiotics is well documented.
