Abstract

In 2009, a community engagement and safety initiative were launched after some older adults in Ferguson, Missouri expressed that they felt their level of safety was declining and they no longer felt as connected within their community. At the same time, it was discovered that reported crime had not significantly increased in Ferguson during the past 20 years. Therefore, in 2013, a separate research study was initiated to further learn about older adult’s perceptions of crime in Ferguson, Missouri and how their quality of life was affected. Data collection for this study concluded in early June 2014, nearly 2 months before the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
