Solving Problems During an Enterprise System Adoption: Does Employees’ Age Matter?

Abstract

The current study aims at investigating the role of employees’ age in the perception of problems and related solutions during an enterprise system (ES) implementation. On the basis of empirical data gathered from Polish ES practitioners and following grounded theory approach, the taxonomies of problems and solutions to these problems have been developed. Next, an analysis into the differences of problem and solution perceptions depending on respondents age has been conducted. The age-based analysis illustrated the need for cooperation between the youngest and the oldest employees in order to work out effective solutions. The main findings suggest that older employees are able to accurately indicate general problems, while younger workers may work out detailed and effective solutions to these problems. The results also suggest that the middle-aged employees have the potential to be the driving force of the implementation project.
