Abstract
This chapter explores the context in which India finds itself including the development challenge that it faces and the need for energy development. It will provide an overview of the various indicators and sustainability challenges that India faces as a background to developing the identities. It builds the case for and outlines six identities. These identities are used in Part II of the book as a basis for analysis and testing.
