Abstract

Combined heart transplantation can be an option for selected patients with failure in dual vital organs. Although there are no standardized criteria for these combined procedures, a number of individual case studies and several series from single centers and registry data show a steady increase of heart transplantation in combination with the kidney, liver, and lung. More episodic is heart/bone marrow transplantation for acquired monoclonal immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis. The indications are varied and depend on organ pairing but can be generally grouped into end-stage heart failure and other organ advanced diseases due to related or unrelated causes. The most frequent combination is the heart and kidney; the United Network for Organ Sharing records 910 procedures from 1987 to 2013. For other organs, numbers are more limited.

This chapter summarizes the main indications for combined transplantation with the heart and describes the most common diseases involved.
