Abstract
The intersections between forest roads and highways are the connection points where the forest road detaches from the route of the highway. A heavy vehicle, like a log hauling truck, that enters to or exits from a forest road, having low speed, will create queues on the highway. The present study is based on records made on a truck with trailer, that travelled on a national road, passing through different intersections with forest roads. Data were collected using GPS receivers mounted on different points of the truck-trailer assembly, and processed using traffic statistics methods, implemented in custom software applications. The results of the tests are useful both for optimizing the geometrical parameters of the intersections, and for increasing the safety and comfort of drivers during the steering maneuvers in forest road – highway intersections.
