Human Dignity: The Right to be a Person

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

This chapter explores the concept of human dignity. As a first approximation, one can depart, again, from ordinary language noting that the Online Oxford English Dictionary explains the main meaning of the term ‘dignity’ as the “state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect”. While there is no specific entry for ‘human dignity’, the notion ‘human right’ is defined as a “right which is believed to belong to every person”. Assuming that ‘human’ in ‘human dignity’ means something similar to ‘human’ in ‘human rights’, it is maybe not too far-fetched to infer that ‘human dignity’ denotes the state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect, a state or quality that is believed to belong to every person. As shorthand that does not leave out too much of the meaning, one can thus take the term ‘human dignity’ as referring to the respect to which every person is entitled.
