Abstract

This chapter reviews a development project in 2008 for Indigenous people in the Purumunda community in the state of Odisha in India that aimed to assist marginalised Indigenous communities by helping them gain control over their lives from oppressive practices and achieve individual and community control and social justice. In particular, the project aimed to alleviate the problem of food insecurity by increasing access to employment rights through the establishment of a community media lab. The chapter describes the implementation, impact and setbacks of the project, and finally analyses the challenges in the voluntary development sector that influence the success or failure of such initiatives, with implications for the future.
