Optical Astronomy: Telescopes

Abstract

The optical telescope is the symbol of astronomy, the collector of radiation from astrophysical sources. The telescopes and their aberrations will be firstly discussed using the formalism of geometric optics. The present telescopes use reflecting optical elements, generally two mirrors, in different configurations to reduce the aberrations. The improvement of the light collection capability is proportional to the aperture; thus, larger and larger telescopes are being designed and built. The technical issues of building large telescopes are discussed.
