Abstract
An intimate narrative of the UN secretary general’s good offices to bring the war to an end, including a dramatic visit to Gaza in the first days after the war. A critical analysis of the international community’s role and why resolution 1860 failed to change an unsustainable status quo in Gaza. A short foray into Gaza’s ancient past and analysis of its present entanglement, due to prolonged occupation and Palestinian division. Attention for the UN’s important role on the ground, both in providing humanitarian assistance during the war and leading reconstruction efforts afterward.
