Abstract

This chapter overviews the development of professional astronomy in Australia, mainly during the period 1850–1910, when John Tebbutt was active. As such it provides a context within which to view Tebbutt’s astronomical activities—outlined in later chapters of this book—and assess his role in helping rebuild and strengthen the foundations of Australian astronomy.
