Abstract
At the end of 1903, John Tebbutt decided to retire, after a 50-year involvement in observational astronomy. However, this turned out to be a ‘Clayton’s retirement’, for he continued his astronomical and meteorological observations—albeit on a much reduced scale—almost up to the date of his death in 1916.
In this chapter, we review the lead up to Tebbutt’s retirement, his post-retirement astronomical observations, his international reputation as an astronomer and the various honours that he received during his twilight years and posthumously—including the naming of a lunar crater after him in 1973. Finally, we examine Tebbutt’s position in the interesting interplay between ‘metropolitan’ and ‘colonial’ initiatives in the nineteenth century Australian science.
