Abstract
After earlier abortive attempts to form national astronomical groups or societies in Australia in the 1870s and 1880s, local groups were established in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide during the 1890s. The Sydney and Melbourne groups, formed in 1895 and 1897, respectively, were branches of the British Astronomical Association. The Sydney-based New South Wales Branch was the brainchild of Walter Gale and Robert Innes, but there was strong support from John Tebbutt, and he was elected the founding President.
In this chapter, we examine the circumstances surrounding the successful founding of the New South Wales Branch and document the rapid and impressive growth it experienced during its first 5 years of existence. Monthly meetings were held, a library was established, a monthly newsletter was circulated to members and observing sections were formed, and many research papers penned by Branch members appeared in the Journal of the British Astronomical Association. Throughout these formative years, John Tebbutt led by example, and was one of those who carefully nurtured the new group.
