Abstract
Humankind originated in one small region on Earth, and then slowly extended its habitat to the entire planet. In doing so, it had to develop increasingly complex technologies, both in order to reach new lands and to live in increasingly harsher environments. The last lands which were settled required fairly advanced technologies, like oceanic navigation, shelters and warm garments for living in the Arctic and technologies to obtain food in such difficult conditions.
