Abstract
As a consequence of a profound misunderstanding related to graduation rates at open admissions institutions, a “failure” narrative has developed about community colleges that has been remarkably long-lived and persistent. This chapter examines the history of this popular “failure” narrative and seeks to challenge our long-standing reliance on deficit-model thinking applied to community colleges and the students who attend them.
