Surgical Emergencies in the Cancer Patient

Abstract

Surgical emergencies in gynecologic cancers are generally not common and typically involve organs that are not gynecologic in origin. Such systems include pelvic vasculature and nerves, gastrointestinal system, and urologic organs. In addition, wound complications such as wound dehiscence and abdominal compartment syndrome can occur in gynecologic cancer surgeries. The management is similar to other surgical fields and is briefly discussed. This chapter focuses on emergencies that can occur intraoperatively and postoperatively as well as in the setting of medical therapies utilized for gynecologic cancers.
