Abstract

Understanding the phenomenon of weight regain in the bariatric patient first requires a full understanding of the physiology of obesity and the specifics of the bariatric procedure utilized in the particular patient. This chapter will explain the physiology of obesity and the mechanisms of action for each of the most common bariatric surgical procedures. It will also explain why weight regain occurs after a bariatric procedure and outline the optimal way to medically monitor the bariatric patient for weight regain in order to maximize prevention. Diagnostic evaluation protocols and recommended strategies for combatting weight regain are also discussed. Finally, weight regain as it relates to the need for surgical conversions and/or revisions of previously performed bariatric surgical procedures is analyzed in this chapter.
