Abstract
Enormous efforts have been made so far by plastic surgeons and investigators to describe the normal anatomic features of the umbilicus. It’s evident that these information are needed to allow us to determine the proper position of the neo-umbilicus during abdominoplasty or any procedure that affects the original umbilical location. Umbilicus is reported to be low riding (below the center at the vertical plain) and almost at the midline in majority of studies. Three formulas have been developed so far in Indian, Iranian, and Croatian populations. There is no superiority for any of those models over the other. As expected before, there is a geographic variation in anthropometric features and the location of umbilicus on abdominal wall across different study populations. Further studies with larger and ethnically diverse study populations as well as validation studies are needed to allow us to endorse the use of these formulas in all umbilicoplasty patients.
