Coding for surgical procedures performed on the stomach, intestines (including duodenum), appendix, liver, biliary tract, pancreas, and peritoneum is covered in this chapter. In each anatomic section of the CPT manual, the code set is further divided into Incision, Excision, Laparoscopy, Enterostomy, and Repair subsections. There are multiple examples in the GI section where procedures of significantly differing complexity are coded with the same CPT code and where procedures done in current practice do not have CPT codes.
