Abstract

The introduction offers a general framework to the book, highlighting the importance of this first comparative approach to Marian devotions in Europe and America. First, contributors analyze the changes in devotional cultures within the political, social, economic, and religious changes in the nineteenth century. After reflecting on the religious revival, they reflect on the evolution of political and national uses of Marian devotions during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as the most important contributions of this book. The book concludes with a reflection on the need of a transnational and interdisciplinary approach to the study of Marian devotions.
