Multidisciplinary Management of Rectal Cancer

Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK with approximately 40,000 new cases registered each year. The majority of patients undergo radical surgery as a curative procedure, which can result in permanent alteration in body image if a stoma is required. The associated symptoms of the disease and the implications of treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, can adversely affect patients’ quality of life (QOL) [1]. Variations in practice and the different uptake of these different modalities in rectal cancer are common, but the reasons to account for this are poorly understood.
