Introduction to Surgery for Students

Abstract

Paediatric surgery is described as the last remaining ‘general’ surgical specialty: not only do paediatric Surgeons work with multiple organ systems; they also work with antenatal to adolescent care.

The aim of this chapter is to concentrate on the essentials for medical student survival whilst on a paediatric surgical rotation. We give tips for history and examination; describe common surgical emergencies and important operations; discuss the areas of super-specialty; and give some description of the career and advice on how to succeed.
