Introduction to Surgery for Students

Abstract

Plastic surgery is a unique medical specialty, derived from the Greek “plastikos”, meaning to remodel, reshape and mold. Plastic surgery can be broadly divided into aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Many medical students find that their exposure to plastic surgery in undergraduate education is limited, and find it difficult to explore it as a career for that reason. In this chapter we provide an overview of the core knowledge that underpins plastic surgery, such as the reconstructive toolbox, wound healing, skin grafts, an introduction to types of grafts and core operations commonly undertaken in plastic surgery.
