Plasma Nitriding of Steels

Abstract

Conventional plasma nitriding has some limitations and disadvantages such as edge effect, hollow-cathode effect (The hollow-cathode effect usually seen in industry resulted by incorrect fixturing. This problem arises from insufficient distance between the parts to be nitrided. In this case, the glow discharge of near specimens are overlapped in cavities leads to the cascading of current densities and severe overheating of the parts.), distortion, and overheating of the specimen. Because of the above-mentioned problems, some new methods were presented to avoid the direct formation of plasma on the surface and consequent problems. One of the methods is active screen or cathodic cage plasma nitriding.
